Many people are unsatisfied with our jobs, not paid enough,
harassed, bullied by managers and peers, or just hate your job. It is very
unpleasant to deal with those issues and makes it difficult to go to work every
day. We end up telling friends and family about it and start looking for
another job. Some people get so
mad they even try to find ways to get even with the company.
In 2010, Paul Shin Divine, a global supply manager for Apple
Inc. was arrested on 23 counts which included wire fraud, conspiracy, money
laundering, doing business with stolen company property, and etc. Divine had
contacted Andrew Ang through an email and collaborated to sell Apple’s internal
price target to Apple’s Asian suppliers for more than $500,000.
Divine’s crime was discovered when Apple staff checked his
laptop and grew suspicious. Apple staff contacted federal officials, the FBI, and
the IRS. They worked together to bring the charges against him. This simple
sharing of information through the use of internet cost Apple $2.4M dollars.
The FBI considers the sharing of America’s trade secrets
associated with our government or private business to be a threat to national
security. A collaborative effect between the FBI and North Carolina’s Research
Triangle works to lessen the sharing of this kind of information through a
program called RED DART. RED DART’s purpose is to educate companies and their
employees at all levels about the dangers of trade secrets being leaked, the
problems it can cause, and a list of recommendations to protect them.
Some of the suggestions of RED DART: do not store vital
information on any device connected to the internet. Firewalls restrict
incoming threats but do not restrict outbound data such as employees sending
emails. Companies need to educate employees about malicious email tactics like
phishing and policies to quarantine suspicious emails.

ReplyDeleteIt’s very hard to stop cyber corporate espionage. Programs like RED DART can help educate companies about the dangers, but small/medium size companies will never have the resources to fight government backed hackers from countries like China. It was recently on the news that Chinese hackers have stolen technology blueprints, company strategies and manufacturing processes from more than 100, mainly American, companies. I think it’s only the beginning.

I agree with every point you make and also believe that this is only the beginning.
DeleteI personally think it is only a matter of time before a global outbreak, almost war if you will, happens regarding sensitive material being stolen. I think this would be an extreme occurrence and would involve complete destruction of databases, company portfolios, and top level security measures. This was a very interesting blog post and really made me think about the safety of online material. National security is very important to all of us, and I believe the transmission and storing of vital information should be reconsidered. I agree with eLearning...this is only the beginning.
ReplyDeleteCall me paranoid but I think we are already running a quite global cyber war with other countries. It is only a matter of time before this conflict escalates into something a little more.
